Heather Thomson Becomes No Barriers Ambassador

No Barriers is excited to announce that Heather Thomson, a cast member of The Real Housewives of New York City, will join our organization as an ambassador of our work.
Thomson is a philanthropist and fashion designer and creator of the Yummie brand of form-fitting clothing designed to inspire confidence in women.
She has also lived a No Barriers Life, conquering obstacles such as the health of her son and working her way up as a successful businesswoman.
“Why I’m attracted to No Barriers is that I get complete fulfillment from it — there’s nothing better than touching and changing someone’s life,” she said.
Thomson said she relates to the No Barriers’ mission on a deeply personal level — when her son Jax was three months old, he was diagnosed with a potentially life-ending liver disease called biliary atresia.
“There’s nothing worse than being a new mommy to a baby you don’t know if you are going to save,” she said.
Although that was a time before Heather had heard of No Barriers, she said she and her husband intuitively knew they had to harness that adversity.
“My husband, Jon, and I also made a promise to each other early on that no matter what the road ahead might bring, that we would not let it tear us apart, but that we would only let our journey with Jax strengthen us,” she said.
Today, Jax unfortunately continues to experience other medical complications, but they don’t prevent Thomson or Jax from living life to the fullest.
“What’s within you is stronger than what’s in your way is something that I practice every day,” she said.
Thomson was introduced to No Barriers through fellow supporter Remembrance Staber, a wellness specialist and fitness consultant. Thomson’s first exposure to No Barriers was at our Outdoor Classic event in Asheville, North Carolina, where she was able to meet many of our participants and ambassadors, such as Kyle Maynard.
While the story of how Maynard – a quadruple congenital amputee – learned to wrestle in high school and go on to climb Mount Kilimanjaro inspired her, the story of how his parents raised him resonated with her as a mother. Thomson said she tries to channel the Maynard family’s vision for her son as she raises Jax.
“Kyle’s parents were so courageous,” she said. “It’s hard when you want to protect your children, but letting them face their challenges is the best thing to do. Kyle’s parents’ decision to push him to live the No Barriers Life was extraordinary parenting that in turn, gave us the extraordinary Kyle Maynard!”
Thomson said she and her husband encourage both of their children to get involved with a variety of sports, from skiing to motocross.
“I showed both of my kids video of Kyle wrestling and a few months later Jax wanted to try it out,” she said. “When Kyle heard about Jax, he sent him his book. And now my little girl, Ella, is doing it too!”
Thomson said she also developed a soft spot for No Barriers Warriors’ work, especially our programs designed to help female veterans.
“The sacrifices these women have made are tremendous,” she said. “As a mom and wife and daughter, I want to show appreciation and gratitude for their service. Their stories are amazing and send a message of strength, perseverance, and teamwork. I want to help spread their message to women everywhere.”
As a businesswoman, Thomson said she’s learned that creating a strong team is the best way to break though barriers that exist in the corporate world.
“As a businesswoman, it’s very important to trust your gut and follow your intuition and vision,” she said. “People will try to change your vision, or even worse, make you feel like you can’t achieve it.
“But I believe that if you can dream it, you can do it.”
No Barriers’ Chief Development Officer Cindy Bean said the non-profit is grateful and fortunate to have Heather as a supporter of our work.
“We’re so thankful Heather wants to continue living her own life without barriers and inspire others to overcome the obstacles in their own lives,” Bean said. “As a No Barriers Ambassador, Heather will no doubt help No Barriers reach many more people with our message and our mission.”
